Pompeii

POMPEII

Pompeii

Pompeii is a vast archaeological site in southern Italy’s Campania region, near the coast of the Bay of Naples. Once a thriving and sophisticated Roman city, Pompeii was buried under meters of ash and pumice after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. The preserved site features excavated ruins of streets and houses that visitors can freely explore.

Visiting Pompeii, the ancient Roman city in southern Italy that was destroyed by a volcano, is on a lot of people’s travel bucket lists. Before I visited Pompeii I felt quite overwhelmed about the best way to visit, so I did a ton of research. Here’s the advice I found most useful on how to visit Pompeii, along with some tips on how to climb Vesuvius.

HOW to GET THERE

How to Get to Pompeii. In all likelihood you will go visit Pompeii either on your own, taking Public Transportation, or arrive on Tour Bus with a Private Tour Group.  If you go with a tour group from Naples, Sorrento or some point on the Amalfi Coast, you will pay one price that will include transportation to from Pompeii to your starting point, entrance to the Pompeii Archeological Sight and a guided tour of the Ancient Ruins of Pompeii.

Going on You Own : If you are staying in Naples, Positano, Capri, or anywhere on the Amalfi Coast you will want to get to the Circumvesuviana Local Train that runs from Naples to Sorrento and back and makes stops and Pompeii, Herculaneum, and the towns between Naples and Sorrento.

From Naples, go to the main Trains Station in Naples, look for the signs for the Circumvesuviana, get a ticket, and ask which platform the for the train to Pompeii. The train ticket cost 3.5 Euros and the Entrance to Pompeii is 11 Euros.

If coming from Capri, take a ferry boat to Sorrento and catch the Circumvesuviana to Pompeii. From any town on the Amalfi Coast, take a bus or ferry boat to Sorrento, and catch the Circumvesuviana Train at the Sorrento Train Station.
